7.2. Different categories of environmental innovation and shared value creation

With reference to the “intervention framework” criterion, three categories of innovations are to be distinguished and can produce a specific and significant positive impact on the environment and on competitive advantage: integrated and additive environmental technological innovations, integrated technological innovations that are not purely environmental, and organizational (non-technological) environmental innovations (Gasmi and Grolleau 2003). Two reasons explain our choice to analyze the different forms of innovations and their impact in terms of CSV for the firm. The first relates to certain theoretical insights on the contributions of these innovations to a firm in terms of reducing negative environmental externalities, or producing positive externalities and competitive advantage. To this end, concrete examples of innovations based on secondary information will be presented. The second reason is the use of these innovations as a tool to analyze the case study concerning the Decathlon Group.
