In secondo luogo, il corpo di Doris è profondamente segnato dall’esperienza della schiavitù, le cui tracce indelebili la donna si ritrova a constatare quasi casualmente scontrandosi con la sua immagine riflessa in uno specchio a casa di Nonso (a cui Doris aveva fatto da balia, e che ora ha bisogno del suo aiuto per nascondere al padre la sua inettitudine):

[…] the woman I saw in […Ormolu mirrors] was so dark I barely recognised her. Where her complexion once had been flawless, now it was webbed with fine lines. Her oval jawline had slackened and her thinning, shoulder-length hair was bleached-white blonde or, perish the thought, had it begun to grey? She had bulked-up too, with hefty, scarred shoulders and arms which looked like they could deliver a mean right hook. Her breasts remained lifeless, stretch-marked sacks.
