After feeding her curiosity about the Soul Collector—learning enough to make her think he was every bit as heinous as Junior—Jordan shifted to a more personal search. It was time to learn about Karen Hollister—the woman who might be her mother.

What could possibly make a person fall in love with a serial killer?

The background information was easy. Because of the way Karen had put herself on the front lines with the press during the Ryland Ripper’s trial, there were numerous pictures and articles about her. Her hair was short and flipped back on the sides, calling Jordan back to pictures she’d seen of the 1980s. It was as though Karen didn’t care that the world had moved on decades since then. She also wore a great deal of makeup, especially around her eyes. Her jewelry was big and clunky and quite clearly cheap costume stuff. Yet her interviews revealed her to be well-spoken and educated.

So why had she chosen to believe a man accused of some of the most heinous killings in American history? The woman had fallen in love with Hollister after he’d been arrested. They’d even married before his trial. What kind of person did something like that? Marry a man who’d brutally butchered so many innocent young women?

After watching several interviews, Jordan decided to focus on other forms of information. Hearing the same rehearsed spiel about lack of physical evidence and inept police work falling from Karen’s mouth over and over had grown tiresome. Newspaper articles focused more on Hollister than his girlfriend/wife, but when they did write about Karen, it was clear most of the reporters thought she had a screw loose.

Not much of a surprise when Karen abruptly dropped out of sight the moment Hollister began to confess. After she disappeared, little was said about her except on important dates, such as the anniversary of Hollister’s sentencing. The last major write up Jordan found was an exposé about Hollister’s time in prison that included a section where the reporter chronicled his search for Karen, which had come up empty.

She was about to sign off when her mind was suddenly hijacked and she was plunged into hell.

Beau glanced up from his discussion with Cody to see Jordan tapping away at Cody’s computer. Then her demeanor changed so quickly, he didn’t immediately realize that she was in distress. Her hands fell away from the keyboard and she turned to face him, staring right through him as her breath came in ragged gasps.

“Jordan?” Beau stumbled with his crutch to get to her. “What’s wrong?”

She put her hands against her chest, clenching her fingers into her shirt. “Don’t! Please!”

As soon a she got to her, he took her arms and dragged her to her feet. “Jordan. I’m here.”

“Stop! Please!”

He could tell she wasn’t talking to him. Hell, she didn’t even know he was there. “Tell me what you see.”

“She’s so young! Don’t do this!”

“Don’t do what?”

“Don’t kill her!”
