Chapter Twelve

Fredric watched as Mathias sat at a desk, typing away on a laptop. The room they were in was rather unassuming, surprisingly so given the number of security measures it had taken to get here. There was some personality throughout the room. Cage had taught Fredric long ago that one could easily read a person based on the rooms they spent the most time in. People often couldn’t help but add their personal touches to it.

Cage specifically took the time to have an array of items intended to disrupt anyone who might be trying to analyze him. Sitting in this room everything was neat and tidy, everything had a place. There was a small entomologist collection, on one of the walls made up of rare and dangerous insects. One bookshelf had a small smattering of books with several taxidermied scorpions.

Fredric recalled Mathias’s earlier comment about the scorpion and the fox. Mathias seemed to deem Fredric one of these scorpions. Perhaps one he’d added to his collection. Fredric wondered if, like Cage, this was an affectation intended to through him off or if it provided real insight into Mathias’s mindset. He finished his idle sweep of the room and looked back to Mathias still typing away.

Fredric knew, because Mathias had told him so, that this laptop never left this room. It was part of Mathias’s security network-both a shield and a vulnerability - for access into the security network could result in the compromise of the entire organization. And only Mathias had full access to it… though that was finally about to change.

Mathias paused in his typing and looked over at Fredric.

“Second thoughts?” asked Fredric.

Mathias looked at him quizzically. “I hadn’t really believed you’d make it this far. Not to this level of access. Did you know that others have tried in the past? Not many, for obvious reasons. And they were all exceptional, in their own ways. I even liked a few of them. But this… finally being here in this moment? It seems unreal. In some ways it feels like a weight is being removed. But in other ways, it feels heavier than ever before.”

He looked pensive for a moment, then shook his head. Opening a drawer at the desk, he pulled out a small box. Opening it revealed a small sensor. “Place a finger on the sensor. It’ll take a sample of blood and encrypt the relevant values into the system.”

Fredric looked at the box. This was the moment. If Mathias had changed his mind, the ‘blood sample’ would probably inject him with a lethal poison. If not… Well, it was too late to back out now.

He reached down and slid the tip of his ring finger into the small depression. There was a quick pinch, and then the sensor blinked once. Mathias hesitated for another moment and then turned back to the keyboard, typing for a few moments more.

“You’ve seen that our network is extensive but you should know that there is far more to it. I suppose you could consider this one ‘branch’ of it.
