Case Study: David McLellan

(Managing Director APAC, Triscreen Media Group)

David started moving across borders at a very early age. As a child he lived in three different countries with his parents—the United Kingdom, Spain and Denmark. Thus it is no surprise that he has continued moving countries during his career.

In June 1983 his Danish employer sent him to Barcelona to develop the company’s southern European business.

In 1984 David moved to Australia where he took several senior executive roles.

In 1990 he moved back to Europe where he took a senior role in Madrid.

After four years he moved back to Australia where he has worked ever since.

Only once did he join an expat club, and then out of curiosity. He found that the club was closed in around itself with very few links to the local community. This is what David explains about expat communities, ‘They tend to be a good place to get started, particularly if you don’t speak the language. However, the people that join often get trapped among themselves!’

Every single time David moved to a new country, he joined the local bridge and tennis clubs. He usually went even further and joined the club committee. He became really involved in the club’s life.

David joins the right associations even if he doesn’t move to the country. During a number of years he spent half of his time in Australia and the other half in California (establishing a subsidiary company for his employer). While there he joined a Californian bridge club and the California Tennis Association.

The main reason David joins the local clubs is that he loves bridge and tennis. It is the best place to play them. The added benefit is that these activities attract ‘high-end people’ who fill the clubs with great networking opportunities.
