Chapter Twenty-Three

He pulled up to the Snowden house to find a car in the driveway and the front door open. With a grimace, he drove down the street. When he returned, he saw her standing on the front porch talking on her phone.

Staying out of sight was easy despite the wide expanse of land. Only three families lived out here and the majority of the land was undeveloped with towering trees lining the property.

Smith’s only neighbors had been Benson and Greenwater with the Devery property vacant. Even with Devery back, she wouldn’t see him even if she was at home. She lived over three miles away. And the Greenwaters kept to themselves.

They wouldn’t know he was out here unless they were right next to him.

He watched, listening. The conversation sounded like business—someone wanting to see her about the land. It was an impossibly good deal to pass up, but she didn’t seem in any hurry to get rid of the property.

What was the girl up to? What had her father told her about what he’d been up to?

“No,” she said. “I have to go. I’m out at the house now. I need to—no, I know I can’t check anything out right now. It’s going to be too dark soon. I’ll have to call the electric company and get the power turned back on along with the water.”

She was going to move in?

He couldn’t allow that unless he found whatever her father had been going to use to get the cases re-opened and Martin McCann a new trial.

“I’ll call you when I get back to the hotel,” she said. “I’m leaving now, thanks for calling, Mr. Reed.”

She pushed out a sigh before turning to lock up. She didn’t have anything other than her purse which meant she hadn’t removed anything from the house yet. The information could still be there, not that he’d be sure of what to look for.

Sarina got in her car and started it. Once she’d driven away, he made his way around to the back of the house. No electricity meant no alarm. He broke the glass of the back door and unlocked it, letting himself in.

The house smelled a little musty, but he ignored the stale scent as he made his way down the corridor. He’d been in here a few times before Smith had gotten suspicious of him. He knew where the office was and went straight to it.

He tried the file cabinets and found them still locked. After that, he tore through the papers on the desk and the books from the shelves. The computer had been taken a few weeks back, but it had been devoid of real files.

It had been like Smith had bought a new computer or had saved everything to an external drive. He hadn’t taken anything from the house, he knew. He’d watched him for a few days before killing him.

He’d wanted to get everything that could possibly link him to those murders. He’d even tore up Ben’s place, but he hadn’t found anything there either.
