Q: What were the first comics you read?

A: I grew up in the 1970s, which was a great time for reprints of comics from earlier decades. My dad would buy me the ones he had read, like Alex Raymond’s Flash Gordon and Hal Foster’s Prince Valiant. I also read Peanuts. For a time I wanted to be Charles Schulz! Then I “dropped out” for a while. In my twenties, I got back in as a fan of Jeff Smith’s Bone, which I thought was so well drawn and so funny.

Q: How far did you go as an actor?

A: As with everything else, I liked the behind-the-scenes process of acting more than I liked the applause. I enjoyed figuring out who my character was and how to block out the action onstage. After college I auditioned for a couple of movies and made the short list for one called Swing Kids but didn’t get the part. Another time I lined up to audition for Francis Ford Coppola for a film he was planning based on Jack Kerouac’s On the Road. We all had to wait outdoors for hours on a cold miserable day. After maybe four hours, a casting director pointed to a few people, and I was not one of them. I noticed just then that Francis Ford Coppola was nearby, seated in a chair, so I decided to say hi. After all, I had nothing to lose! He was friendly and nice, but when I told him I had not been picked, he said, “Oh well.” And that is when I realized that acting was not for me.
