SHAYE

Alex pulls the covers all the way up to my chin, enveloping me in softness and warmth. My tired limbs sink into the mattress, but my brain is trying to crawl out my ear to start a conga line across the headboard with my heart. One minute I was dancing with Alex, telling myself things couldn't get better than they were right then, and then bam! He goes and proves me wrong by touching his lips to mine.

“Goodnight, Shaye.”

Before he can escape, I take his hand in mine and press a whisper of a kiss to his knuckles. In return, he sighs—a heaviness to match my lightness—and kisses my forehead.

I look up with a teasing grin. “That's highly inappropriate.”

His broad shoulders lift with laughter, even as he shakes his head. “Yeah, well, I can be a highly inappropriate person sometimes.”

I scoff. “I highly doubt that.”

I'm offering him an opening; a chance to discuss what happened between us, but he doesn't take it. The window is still open, the curtains blowing in the warmer-than-usual breeze, and it steals some of the stuffiness from the room. He reaches out to close it, but I stop him.

“Leave it open. Please.”

One dark brow arches in disapproval. “Are you trying to get sick?”

“I'll have my dad shut it before he goes to bed.”

He gives that little 'you're the boss' shrug before heading to the door.

“Any big plans tonight?” I ask before he can leave.

I'm fishing for a glimpse into what his life is like outside these walls. That's it. I'm definitely not trying to figure out if he has a date or a booty call or even a live-in girlfriend waiting for him. It's a topic we haven't discussed, but if he's with someone and hasn't told me, I'm ninety-nine-point-nine percent sure that would hurt far worse than, yanno, breaking a windshield with my head.

“Trevor should be home from practice by now,” he says, glancing at his watch. “So I'll probably just sit around with him while he does homework. Maybe order a pizza if he's hungry.”

“Sounds fun.” I have no idea what else to say.

“Need anything before I leave?”

“Nope.” I smile brightly. “All good here.”

“Okay, then.” He snaps his fingers. “C'mon, Duchess. Let's go for a walk.”

Duchess perks up from her post right inside the door and leads the way out to the hall, carrying herself like only a royal could.

“See you in the morning.” Alex's hand lingers over the light switch and, for just a split-second, he lets his guard down. Dark eyes roam over my face, my neck, my body tucked safely between the sheets. The look of desire is a gift, and I mirror it right back to him because life is short and shit happens and tonight was perfect.

“Goodnight, Alex.”

“Sweet dreams, beautiful.” The light dies. The door clicks shut.

Lord give me strength. This man is going to be the death of me.
