Chapter 8 - Colten

I’ve walked the length of my cabin about twenty times already. Still, I can’t seem to grasp Iris’ place in my life.

I like her. That is undeniably true. In fact, I care about Iris more than I’ve cared about any woman in my entire life. She’s witty, smart, and not to mention sexy. Iris is the type of woman I can see myself settling down with, starting a family with, yet I can’t dare have such thoughts with this woman since she will leave once the documentary is complete.

Shaking my head, I continue to my kitchen. “What will happen when she leaves?” I don’t want to think about it, but I can’t get the thought out of my head. I keep replaying Kenneth’s words about serious relationships in my head, and there is only one way to stop it.

“Hi Colten,” Iris answers the phone, and my stomach flutters.

After brief pleasantries, I ask, “Would you like to join me for lunch at Crab Back? That’s a restaurant overlooking the waterside.”

I hold my breath, only to release it when Iris says, “I would love to. I can be there in an hour.”

“Perfect,” I say as I flex my fingers, then say goodbye.

I’m at the restaurant about fifteen minutes before Iris walks through the door. She’s wearing a simple long sleeve sweater and jeans that show the true lushness of her ass. I swallow hard and wave her over, watching the way her hips sway when she walks.

As she takes the empty seat opposite mine, a familiar waitress comes over to our table. “Hi Colten,” Mia smiles brightly. “I haven’t seen you in a while. Keeping yourself busy?”

“Yes, actually,” I respond to one of my veteran brother’s wives. “I’ve been helping Iris with the documentary.”

Mia turns to Iris now, her smile growing even brighter. “Oh yeah. I heard there was a woman in town doing a documentary. Hi.” Mia offers her hand. “My name is Mia.”

“Nice to meet you, Mia,” Iris accepts her hand.

“Erika and I were just speaking about that.” Mia scans the room, then waves over another waitress. After I introduce the women to each other, they seem to exclude me from the conversation.

“So, did you guys always live in Virgin Falls?” Iris asks the waitresses.

Erika shakes her head. “Oh no. I needed a change, so I moved here and now that I’ve found the love of my life, there’s no moving out for me.”

I explain to Iris that Erika is now married to one of my friends, and she shakes her head in acknowledgment.

“And I came here to get over my friend’s death,” Mia explained. “But after falling in love with both this place and my husband, I stayed.”

Iris looks at the woman with a slight smile on her face, her eyebrow raised. “So, you both fell in love with men here and settled down.”

The two waitresses look at each other, but Mia answers. “I guess we did. But we also love it here. The people, the scenery, and the simple life.
