INCENSE

Her boudoir is ornamented with

The works of the Bloomsbury mystics—

Limited editions in warped vellum;

There is also a mauve draped prie-dieu

And a New Mexican crucifix.

Sinister and intimidating

As this environment might appear,

Her ecstasies can be distinguished

From those of Lais the agnostic

Only by their singular frequency.

A NEOCLASSICIST

I know your moral sources, prig.

Last night you plunged awake screaming.

You dreamed you’d grown extremely old,

Lay dying, and to your deathbed,

All the girls you’d ever slept with

Came, as old as you, to watch you die.

Comatose, your blotched residues

Shrivelled and froze between stiff sheets;

And the faces, dim as under

Dirty water, incurious,

Silent, of a room full of old,

Old women, waited, patiently.
