But for my own mother I was not there . . .
and at the gates of the world, between
holy ground
and ground of almost all its holiness gone, I loiter
in stupid fantasies I can live that day again.
Why did you come so late?
Why will you go too early?
I know there are regrets
we can never be rid of,
that fade but never leave:
permanent remorse. Knowing this, I know also
I am to draw from that surplus stored up
of tenderness that was hers by right,
which possibly no one ever gave her,
and give it away, freely.
