SETH

* * *

Seth drove below the speed limit. He knew he had no equipment violations that would rate being pulled over by the CHP officer behind him. Without being obvious, Seth kept a close watch on the lawman. They were approaching an exit. If he planned to initiate a traffic stop, it would be soon.

He gripped the steering wheel tighter. The cruiser exited the highway off-ramp. The swapped license plates had done their job. No doubt the officer had run the vehicle, and the pickup appeared not to belong to Seth Farley but to some shmuck, probably from Valencia, on his way to Vegas with Seth’s plates on his truck. Seth chuckled. I’d hate to be that guy when he gets pulled over.

They’d skirted disaster. He could focus on getting to the cabin. Amber’s objections to him killing the cop if it had been necessary disturbed him. He’d better find out just how loyal she was to him.

“You know, there will probably come a time where I’ll have to eliminate law enforcement officers who are after us, right?”

From the horrified look she gave him, he’d caught her by surprise.

Blood pounded in his ears. “Why are you looking at me like that?”

“Because”—she paused—”I don’t understand why we can’t go on with our life together without hurting anyone. Harming a cop goes against everything I’ve ever known. I’m still married to one.”

“How do you think I feel? I was a cop. It’s all I ever wanted to be. But understand this: Just because I have you on my side now doesn’t mean I won’t carry through my mission.”

She twisted in her seat to face him a little more. “What exactly is your mission? Why are you killing LAPD officers?”

“When I got out of high school, I couldn’t afford to go to college, so I went into the military. I wanted to be an MP—military policeman. Being an MP in the military would help me get into the LAPD. My dad’s a cop.

“After a stint in the front lines of the Middle East, the army did testing and found out I had an aptitude with electronics, so they assigned me to electronics warfare and surveillance.” He smiled. “I was pissed because that wasn’t part of my plan.

“My life took a twist. I was a natural with the electronics—a military rock star. I got my degree while in the military and after an eight-year hitch, joined the LAPD.”

“And how did joining the LAPD transition into killing fellow cops?”

“Did you see that sign? Big Bear, fifty miles away.” He took a hit from a bottle of water and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand.

“I was older than most of the people in my academy class. Because of my military experience, they chose me as the class leader. I ran a tight ship. Most of the snowflakes in my class didn’t understand they’d joined a paramilitary organization.”

Amber nodded. “Roy said something similar about some people he worked with.” She shot him a quick glance.
