2245Z, 6 April 1983, USS John Jay, GIUK Gap

It was a routine quiet evening for the John Jay’s wardroom. Darren Walsh and Stan Wilkins sat at the table, playing cribbage. Yevgeniy Grekov and Leonid Pavlov were finishing up their third bowl of popcorn. The two Russian fliers had developed a real appetite for American popcorn and American movies. Will Morris and Sam Lowe were busy rewinding the reels from the evening movie while Pete McKay and Dale Horton were arguing about the merits of the evening’s entertainment, a particularly bad flick titled The Last of the Wild Bunch.

“Damn it, Eng,” Horton complained. “I sat through a whole lot of really dusty scenery and sleeper of a plot just because you said there was skin in it. I’m demanding two punches on my hacker card.”

McKay laughed as he reached over and smacked Horton on the arm. “Glad to give you two punches.” He then shook his head. “I don’t understand. I saw this flick last off-crew. There was skin in it. I would remember something like that. What happened to the skin?”

“Alert one! Alert one!” the 1MC blasted, interrupting the discussion. McKay and Morris crashed into each other at the door as they rushed out, closely followed by Dale Horton. All three rushed up the ladder and then ducked into the radio room.

Walsh waited for the melee to leave and then slowly stood. Looking over at the pair of Russians, he said, “Leonid, Yevgeniy, you two stay here with the Chop. Looks like we have business to attend to, probably just another drill.” He and Wilkins followed the other three up the ladder to Ops upper level, then continued straight, on to the control room.

They had just stepped up onto the periscope stand when McKay and Horton charged in from radio holding a page of print.

“Captain,” McKay said solemnly, “we have a properly formatted alertment message. Sir, this is not an exercise message.” He handed the page to Walsh.

Walsh and Wilkins read the formatted message.
