David Glick needed his key to enter Il Bistro, his posh eatery in Coconut Grove. The staff was preparing for the lunch crowd, but doors wouldnât open to clients until 11:30. This elegant little, sixteen-table hotspot for the Miami corporate crowd was his Friday mission. Each of his six restaurants had its own day of the week for his full attention. As a Jew, Saturday was his day of rest.
He cast a critical eye over table settings and chair placements, then strode toward the kitchen to check prep progress. Less than an hour to be ready, but delectable aromas already wafted across the room. He moved from the grill, to the ovens, to the prep stations, but was having trouble concentrating.
Ivan Shulskyâs brutal death, the third of his old Mossad team, had shaken him. When Elon, AKA Avrum Nussbaum, was murdered right in the Technion parking lot, he chalked it up to a growing wave of violence. Despite Floridaâs tough-on- crime posture, South Miami could still be dangerous.
His danger radar lit up when Simon Levy died in Virginia, but it could have been the act of an angry lover, protecting his âturf.â That was the premise for the Fairfax P.D., anyhow.
But Shulskyâs murder sounded like an execution, despite an effort to muddy the waters. Was someone coming after his team, these many years later?
His brow wrinkled, and he sighed. Regardless, heâd change his daily schedule. Much too predictable, and as a long-time Mossad spec op leader, Asher ben David, AKA David Glick, knew he should have been more careful. Reliable personal habits made for an easy target.
His cell phone, vibrating in his pocket, drew his attention. A text, and he recognized the sender: the Washingt0n embassy. It could only be from his American Mossad handler. A call forbearing trouble. He opened the message.
Scheduled interview with Chas. Willis, Miami restaurant critic â 2 PM, Mikes Place.
He sighed and sent a confirmation. Charles Willis was the alias for Miamiâs chief Mossad agent, and Mikeâs Place was a courtyard in the Brickell Mall. This must be about his teammatesâ murders. They probably have some intel for him.
He shrugged, returned his phone to his pocket, and went about preparing his restaurant for the afternoon rush. Once in the Mossad, you were never really out. Or safe.

Glick spotted Jacob Orloff, AKA Charles Willis, perched on a bench in the center of the lobby, reading the Miami Herald. He settled near him and began fussing with his cell phone, not making eye-contact.
âWhatâs up?â he mumbled through closed lips.
âYou know about Shulsky?â Orloffâs face was shielded by the newspaper.
âOf course.â Glick pretended to talk on his phone. âHeâs the third to die. I presume I should be worried.â
âDamned right. These are targeted assassinations, and the killer wants them up close and personal.â
âHe wants his victim to know why, huh?â âYes. His ⦠or hers.â
âWhat?â Glick glanced at Orloff from the corners of his eyes. âYouâve got a suspect?â
âItâs clearly revenge killing, likely from a descendent
