Chapter 16

Clara walked for hours under one streetlight after the other until she had no idea where she was. Glancing at her phone, she saw that it was just after 11:30 and remembered Nikki telling her that the freaks came out after midnight in New York City. Shivering, and for the first time noticing how damp and uncomfortable the night air was, she finally accepted the inevitable.

She should return to the condo and try to console Travis. He had to be distraught over the loss of his fiancé and the mother of his child. Yet, all she really wanted to do was go to bed, lose herself in sleep, and not have a single thought.

Hailing a taxi, she gave the driver her Tribeca address then leaned her head back on the smelly upholstery wondering how her life had become such a mess. In her time she was esteemed as the Seven, yet, in the future her life was nothing short of a disaster.

She was still this way fifteen minutes later when they passed through Times Square and her eyes were drawn toward the bright neon lights. Sliding toward the window, she leaned her head against the glass for a better look.

“Stop!” she shouted. “Stop the car.”

The driver stopped in the middle of the street. “You said you wanted to go to…”

“I know what I say but I have changed my mind.” Handing him several bills she opened the door and stepped out. “Keep the change.”

The bar she entered was crowded with revelers looking to have a good time. Clara walked up to the crowded counter and took a seat beside one of the patrons who sat silently nursing his drink. “I’m so sorry, Travis.”

Travis turned to look at her with bloodshot eyes. “Yeah, so am I.” Downing the remains of his drink, he ordered another. “It hard to believe Nikki is really gone.”

Travis was now a single parent. He had a daughter to raise, alone. Would he be granted a discharge, or be forced to return to Afghanistan? If that was the case, he needed to know that Clara would love nothing more than to be his daughter’s mother. “What will you do now, Travis?”

“I’ll be discharged in a few months and I will probably move down to South Carolina with my parents for a while, at least until I decide exactly where I want to settle down. In the last few years, I’ve grown tired of the big city. I need a lawn with grass to cut and a place for a couple of dogs to run free.”

Perhaps he would ask his parents to care for his daughter until he was discharged? It would give their lives a new purpose, something to live for. “Your parents would love that.” She decided that now wasn’t the appropriate time to discuss their future.

“I need to spend more time with mom and dad.” He waved to the bartender, ordered another drink and then turned sideways on his stool to look at her. Clara was left stunned when out of the blue he murmured, “You are a very beautiful woman, Clara.
