Chapter Six

Liam

Something disturbed my sleep around four o’clock in the morning. I reached out beside me and realized Ashley wasn’t in bed anymore. I fought against the fog of sleep and listened to see if she was with Caitlin. The sound of retching had me bolting out of bed and running to the bathroom. Ashely was hunched over the toilet, looking very pale and completely miserable. I was due at the station in just a few hours, but there was no way I could leave her if she was sick.

I wet a rag, folded it, and placed it on the back of her neck.

“I’m fine,” she croaked. “I’m sure it’s just a stomach bug.”

“You don’t look fine, baby girl. Do you think you can stand up or are you going to be sick again?”

“I think I’m okay now.”

I helped her to her feet and then carried her back to bed, tucking her in. I called work and asked for the day off, explaining why, and then I crawled into bed with her, pulling her tight against my body. She didn’t feel feverish, and I hoped she was right, that it was just a twenty-four bug. I had no problem taking care of my girls today, but I hated that she felt so bad.

She jumped out of bed twice more, then got sick after breakfast again. I didn’t want to take any chances that this could be something really nasty so I called the family doctor and made an appointment for her. Ashley glared at me from where she’d curled up in the corner of the couch with a bottle of water and some crackers.

“I’m fine, Liam. Going to the doctor isn’t going to accomplish anything except having to pay for an office visit. My insurance has a high deductible.”

“I’ll take care of it,” I said. “I want Dr. Murphy to make sure everything is fine. There are some nasty viruses out there.”

Her belligerent look melted away. “I don’t want to get Caitlin sick.”

“I’ll take care of Caitlin today. And I’m going to take care of you too. We can go to the doctor together.”

“Fine. But you’re staying in the waiting room.”

I didn’t care too much for that answer, but if she needed some space, I would give it to her. Even if she were my wife, I couldn’t exactly demand to go in the back with her. Oddly, the thought of making her my wife didn’t freak me out like I’d thought it would. I could picture us taking more family outings, where I got to claim Caitlin and her both. I’d loved hearing the waitress call us a family last night, and I wanted to make it a reality. I just wasn’t sure how Ashley would react. We’d only been together a few weeks, and it wasn’t like we’d come out as a couple to our friends and her family. My family was still in Ireland, but I knew my mother would adore Ashley. Hopefully, they’d get to meet one day.
