Diary, February 17, 1863

Henderson recorded the same journey:

[February 15] Rose, made a hasty breakft, donned blanket + oilskin cover + started to walk to boat landing in heavy rain . . . Regt. soon folld [followed] it with 149th started in “Louisiana”; passed Alexandria front at C[ourt].H[ouse]. + Mount Vernon + Fort Washington + near mouth of Acquia @ ch. Stopped + cast anchor for the night it being too shallow for our deeply loaded boat to go much further—slept on slats in stateroom cold + shivering. [Feb]16 next morng started + soon ran aground—A lighter came along + took off troops. passing Aq[uia] Ch [court house] arrived at Bells Landing—in the midst of a fleet of vessels unloading troops + govt. stores-soon unloaded + staking my seat in a U.S. wagon in charge of our medical stores in a train of some 20 started for “Belle Plain” some 2 miles back from the river on a dreadfully sorry “corduroy” road, the country + heights around being composed to a great extent of a deep sand into which the teams sink to the hubs in bad weather. commenced our ascent on a dreadfully jolting road with sharp curves passing numerous camps at each turn + wind of the road + in due time arrived at the designated spot on the side of a ravine covered with scruffy pine the surrounding plains showing evidence of cultivation in the furrowed ground in some of which corn stalks + a scanty growth of rye bore witness to the attempt to raise some wheat from the sterile soil—As far as the eye can range around on hilltop + in the vales the country is whitened with the encampments of the U.S. while not a vestige of a landmark is to be seen the fences having been taken for fuel by the occupying forces—19
