Selene sat at the desk in her private office, safely nestled back in her penthouse as she stared down at the innocuous black card sitting on the desk in front of her. She could hear Dénaïza and Lawrence arguing in the other room, but she didn’t have the energy to deal with them. She knew they were worried.

Shadow stood across the office, silent and brooding. Neither of them mentioned what had happened in the conference room prior to the arrival of the flowers, and it was for the best, she could only deal with one crisis at a time.

She glanced across at him as he poured himself a scotch and lifted the heavy glass to his lips. He looked as unsettled as she felt. The air in the room felt heavy, weighed down with tension and indecision. The truth was neither of them knew how to handle the other. They weren’t the same carefree kids who’d loved each other a lifetime ago. Now they were both irreparably damaged, and they carried with them the scars and weight of their secrets.

But despite everything, his presence was oddly comforting. Her mind was screaming at her not to trust him. She wasn’t even sure she believed that he wouldn’t actually kill her, but she couldn’t be certain. There was still so much of the boy inside him, and every now and then she would catch glimpses of him beneath the layers, but there was also the man. Dark, dangerous, he made the tiny hairs on her arms rise and prickle with an awareness of him that would not be ignored.

Even now she wanted him, she ached. She wanted his mouth on her, his hands, she wanted him buried deep inside her and she hated herself for her weakness. There was too much at stake. They were so close to achieving everything she and Dénaïza had devoted the last decade and a half to. If she was going to die, so be it. She’s made her peace with it years ago, but to fail at the last moment because she’d placed her trust in the wrong person. That she could not allow.

Yet, she couldn’t deny his connection to all of this. Deep down in her gut she had a feeling she would need him. That he had a part to play, they all did, and to win, they had to be all in.

A loud knock at the door interrupted Selene’s thoughts, and as the door opened, in stepped a man in his late fifties. He was a large man but trim around the middle. He had salt and pepper hair, cut neatly into a short back and sides. His bushy moustache curved slightly over his top lip and was shot with slivery flecks of gray. His eyes, a serious gray-blue were shrewd and assessing as they landed on Shadow, but as they tracked over to Selene they softened at the edges.

He stepped more fully into the room and shut the door behind him. His gun was holstered at his hip, nestled neatly into his gun belt.
