CHAPTER 28

Erin wasn’t in a rush to tell Terry everything that they had found. She wanted to give Adrienne a chance to change her mind. Adrienne had made the decision in a hurry and might regret it afterward. Erin couldn’t do anything about it if she had already passed the information on to the police. But if she held back, then, if Adrienne changed her mind, there was no harm done and she and Adrienne would be the only ones who knew what she had found.

So she didn’t tell Terry when she returned home. She let Adrienne sleep on it and didn’t go over to the police department offices until after her early shift at Auntie Clem’s.

She hoped Terry would be in the office and not out patrolling. Her hopes were rewarded by Clara’s nod.

“Yes, he’s here. Let me see whether he is free to see you.”

Erin knew that he would be. Clara liked to play the gatekeeper and bar Erin from entry, but Terry never refused Erin unless he was right in the middle of a call or interview.

Once upon a time, Erin would have just gone in, waving at Clara as she passed or leaving her a box of treats to keep her busy for a few minutes. But after a couple of unfortunate incidents where Erin had been caught snooping where she shouldn’t have been, Clara was now charged not to let her past without an escort.

But Erin wasn’t there to snoop; she had legitimate information to pass on to Terry to aid him in his investigation.

“He will see you,” Clara said in a slightly disapproving voice as she hung up the phone, which meant that Erin could walk over to Terry’s office. It was a worse mess than usual—maybe the investigation into Simon’s death was producing a lot of paperwork—and the tiny office, made for one person and occupied by two desks, was claustrophobic.

“Uh, let’s grab a meeting room,” Terry suggested as he came out from behind his desk and stepped around a couple of stacks of paper on the floor. There was no more room on his desk or credenza.

Erin looked curiously at the paper but was too far away to make anything out. Terry took her to the same interview room that she and Stayner had occupied while he told her about Simon’s poisoning and all the clues that pointed to an employee of Auntie Clem’s Bakery, Erin in particular.

“Coffee?” Terry offered.

“No. I’m good.”

“What can we do for you today?”

Erin had printed out a few of the web pages that she had found while working with Adrienne.

“I have some additional information for you about Simon Simpson.”

“Oh, really? Where did this information come from?”

“Public internet search. Nothing confidential. Nothing shady.”

He nodded and leaned forward, keen to see what she had.

Erin first showed him the social profiles. All of Simon’s little families. Or all the ones that she had found. She didn’t doubt that she might have missed some additional social profiles, maybe ones where he
