Chapter 16
CARA
The first thing that hit me the next morning the instant I woke up was the reality that, yes, I had been the sort of idiot girl who sat by my phone all night.
At least I was comfy. I was curled up on my couch, a big, heavy quilt pulled over me and Mab curled up at my feet. The candle Iâd lit the night before was long burned out, and the glass of wine Iâd taken two sips of before being too depressed to even finish it was still on the coffee table.
I stretched, letting the blood rush to my muscles and as soon as I was at least a little bit awake, it hit me.
I was bloody furious.
Aiden. That little shithead brat. Iâd messaged him last night in a totally reasonable way, simply wanting to talk about what was going on between us.
He apparently couldnât even bother to respond. I guess I had my answer.
Mab seemed to sense my anger. She got up arching her back slightly and regarding me with a wary expression.
âOh, baby,â I said, reaching over and scratching behind her ears. âIâm not mad at you â Iâm mad at the idjit manchild who didnât even respect me enough to text me back.â
My answer mustâve not assuaged Mab, as her next move was to hop off the couch and run under the nearest easy chair.
It was Saturday morning, the day of our supposed date, and all I wanted to do was sock that arsehole in the face. It was mind-boggling. Seriously, what did he think he was going to do? Blow me off all weekend and just come into work on Monday pretending like nothing was amiss? One wouldâve thought heâd get in touch just to avoid having an awkward work situation.
That was Aiden, I supposed â the kind of idjit who did whatever he wanted, always knowing in the back of his mind that heâd be able to smooth talk his way out of any jam heâd gotten himself into. Whatever was happening between us, I was determined not to let this be one of those times.
I was determined. He was going to give me an explanation, one way or another, and there was no way in bloody hell I was about to give him until Monday to think of some shite excuse for what heâd done.
I threw off the quilt and got up, planting my feet on the floor, and storming into the bedroom. I threw on a pair of jeans and a sweater, stepping into some Converse sneakers before grabbing my keys and heading out the door.
I threw open the door to my apartment building and stepped out into the chilly, mid-November air. It was a little overcast, the sun peeking through the clouds. I wore a big smile on my face. I was ready for some damn justice.
As soon as Iâd made my way to my car, I heard a familiar laugh carry down the street.
No way. There was no way in hell it was him.
