Elodie ran up the stairs to the penthouse rather than take the lift. She needed to expel some of her pent up anger at the thought of Harriet ignoring Gabby. Gazz answered the door to her knock, his face lighting up with a smile when he saw her.

‘Hi.’

‘Hi. I’ve come up to see Philippe,’ she said, smiling back. Gazz opened the door wider.

‘Come on in. My granddad gets all the ladies. What’s he got that I haven’t?’

‘Just some information I need,’ Elodie said. ‘He was asking at a restaurant that Gabby likes whether they could cater for her birthday.’

‘The answer is, yes, they can,’ Philippe said, appearing in the hallway. ‘Afternoon tea with champagne is booked for four o’clock on the thirty-first. They’d like the party to finish by six thirty, at the latest, so they can prepare for a busy evening.’

‘Brilliant,’ Elodie said. ‘Two and half hours is fine. Just one thing – where is it?’

‘Here’s their card. You can go check it out if you want to.’

‘Thank you so much.’

‘My pleasure. How is Gabriella now? Her morning was quite a stressful one.’

‘She seems fine, a bit quiet.’ Elodie said. ‘I’m so pleased she’s decided to keep and move into the house because that means I get to live in the south of France too. Can’t wait.’

Philippe nodded. ‘And she’s not still upset over your mother?’

‘Gabby told me she’d seen Harriet and that Harriet didn’t see her. But she did, didn’t she?’

Philippe gave a reluctant nod.

‘And chose to ignore her as I suspected. No wonder Gabby was quiet. If you only knew how much I hate that woman for the hurt she’s caused Gabby.’

‘But she’s Gabby’s daughter and she still loves her,’ Philippe said. ‘And she’s your mother,’

Elodie shook her head quickly. ‘Not in any true sense of that word. Gabby has been my mother for the last twenty years. Harriet, by walking away and leaving, forfeited the right to the name. And she needn’t think I want her in my life now, because I don’t. Excuse me,’ and Elodie left the two men before they could see the tears streaking down her face.
