Chapter 16

One of the perks of being back at my parents’ house for a few weeks and working on my own schedule was that I should have been able to sleep a little later. It wasn’t working out for me. There was so much going on in my mind, I couldn’t force myself to keep my eyes closed any longer than I usually did when I had to go into the office. In fact, over the last few days, I found myself staring up at the ceiling when it was still dark out.

It was like parts of my brain were still working even when the rest of it tried to check out. Those parts were definitely putting in overtime. They were going to deserve a bonus when all this was said and done, which

I hoped was fairly soon and without the disaster at the end I worried was in store.

I was still thinking about the conversation with Jax at the office. I didn’t know what to believe. When the lawyers from the other side had contacted me, they’d been so confident.

It wasn’t all that unexpected. You want a lawyer to be confident. When somebody has to walk into a courtroom and face off against a judge or a jury, or even just another set of legal professionals, it takes guts. Especially when their side doesn’t look promising.

But this was more than that just inherent lawyer arrogance. This was security, a sureness that only really came when a legal team truly felt like they had a chance.

It was definitely not what I wanted to think was going on because if VanBuren and Masterston were so confident in their case and sure of their ability to come out victorious when standing in front of a judge, that meant they really did have evidence. More importantly, it meant Jax wasn’t telling me the truth.

As soon as I’d agreed to help him out mostly as a favor to my brother, I made the commitment that I was going to trust him. I believed when he told Brian he didn’t do anything wrong, and I believed it when he told me the same thing. It was the whole reason I was willing to temporarily uproot my life and come here to take his case. I never would have done it if I thought he was in the wrong.

I didn’t want to think I was wrong. It made me feel sick to consider that he might have been lying to everybody and had actually stolen the idea from his employee. Even if it wasn’t an outright theft of a complete concept, just skimming off some ideas or design elements was unethical and illegal. Firing him after would be even worse.

They weren’t doing me any favors to ease my anxiety, either. I asked for more information regarding the evidence Meyer supposedly had, but they wouldn’t give it to me. VanBuren claimed offering it up would be revealing her case and that she wasn’t going to compromise the potential for getting her client what he deserved.
