Chapter Four

Evan sat on his small couch downstairs with his face buried in his hands. When he sensed Nikolai walk pass him, he looked up to see him go into the small refrigerator he kept to avoid going upstairs to get a snack or a drink.

“Orange juice?”

Evan nodded and let his head hang again. After Nikolai returned, he accepted the drink, and then twisted away from him with a groan.

Nudging him, Nikolai said, “Oh come on, Evan. It’s not that bad.”

“You must think I’m such an idiot.”

“Not at all. I do think you’re drunk, stubborn, hot tempered and maybe a little paranoid, but not an idiot.”

Evan turned back to see Nikolai sitting back with a laughing grin on his face and his arms draped across the back of the sofa.

“You know, if you think about it, you have to admit the whole situation is funny.”

Evan sputtered. “Not from this side of the equation,” he murmured and finished the juice in two long gulps.

“What made you think I was Mariah’s boyfriend anyway? That man doesn’t look like me at all. I mean, he’s hot, but...”

Evan leaned back into Nikolai’s arm. “I didn’t know what Mariah’s boyfriend looked like. All I knew was his name was Nick.”

“Ahhh, and when I showed up...”

“Yeah. Stupid, huh?”

“No, an honest mistake. A little too much Christmas cheer clouded your mind is all. Your brain found it difficult to notice that I was here for you. Besides, for the record, no one has ever called me Nick.”

“No?”

“Nope, but I could be a Nick for you.”

He couldn’t shake the need to know what or who brought this beautiful man to his house tonight. “You said you came out to deliver the gifts for Ronald.” Nikolai nodded and he continued, “Why did you volunteer?”

Evan moved closer to Nikolai when he dropped his arm around his shoulder and smiled. “Kris told me that if I lent a hand delivering the gifts I would find what I was looking for. As soon as you opened the door I knew he was right.”

Confused, Evan’s brow crinkled. “Kris? Who’s that?”

“He’s this old guy that hangs around the Salvation Army building. Sometimes he tells us where to go pick up contributions from people who want to donate. He helps at the mission serving dinner, too. Kris said he popped into Mariah’s bar and you helped him out tonight.”

“Kris,” Evan said the name again amazed.

As in Kringle? No way!

“Uh-huh, short old guy with bushy silver hair on his face and head,” Nikolai went on. “I don’t know his last name, but he’s really very nice. He told me a little about you and here I am.”

“This is crazy. Do you know anything about him personally? Do you see him a lot?”

Evan watched a small line appear between Nikolai's brows as he thought it over, then shake his head. “Not really. Come to think of it I only see him around this time of the year.”

“So you really are interested in me and not my sister?” He still couldn’t believe Nikolai was here with him and not Mariah.
