Oz bolted across the room for Liz, but he was too late. With one smooth jump onto the patio, Clive burst through the door, grabbed Liz and pulled her outside. Oz followed, but a strong body slammed him from the right and grappled him into a choke hold.

His police training kicked in and he landed several blows but his assailant matched his abilities, unwilling to surrender. He couldn’t help Liz until he took this guy out. Oz maneuvered around the man, wrestled him into a secure hold and flipped him onto his stomach. He pressed all his strength onto his torso and pinned the man to the ground, landing several punches, but he kept squirming. Liz clung to a handrail as Clive tried to pull her free.

“Fight,” Oz said, unable to help her.

Liz kicked her foot into Clive’s knee. He stumbled backward, released his hold and ran with a limp for the last boat ready to pull out. Oz tightened his grip on the criminal he’d secured and held his clasped hands behind his back.

Blue lights reflected off the water, and the familiar barking of a K-9 unit echoed from the bank. Several officers raced after the gang members, but the boats took off at full speed.

One of the officers tossed Oz a pair of handcuffs, helped hoist the criminal to his feet and led him off to a squad car.

“You two sure know how to get into trouble,” Bronson said when they joined him on the dock.

Liz motioned toward the disappearing boat lights. “The rest of them are headed south. Once they make it to their trucks, they’ll use the back roads to get away.”

Bronson squeezed his radio and issued a BOLO for the vehicles. “Headed south on Road 34 from the marina toward the Lake End Restaurant. Get a couple of units there ASAP.”

He turned back to Oz and Liz, then nodded to the boat behind them. “Any idea who he is?”

Hank stood on his second-level patio and raised a glass. “Great work. Thanks for the entertainment. I’ve not seen that much excitement since I left the streets of New York City.”

With a quick wave, Oz turned back to Bronson. “He’s a retired police captain who helped us earlier.”

Bronson motioned toward the steep incline at the end of the dock. “I’ve got a car heated and ready to take you to the precinct. Also, Sergeant Wright has arranged to put both of you up at the hotel with guards.” His partner led the way up the hill. “Admin is working on the logistics.”

“Thanks, but I’m done hiding out,” Liz said. “I’ll be staying in my apartment tonight. You’re welcome to place some guards there if you want.”

“Then you’ll need this.” Bronson opened the driver’s door and pulled a weapon off his seat. “Sergeant Wright told me to give this back to you. Everything cleared.”

“That’s great.” She pressed her police-issued 9mm into her jacket pocket. “Glad to have it back.”

Oz stood next to the door. “You’ll need it if you return to your apartment.
