Chapter Four

“Trust me.” It had been teasing, nothing more than a joke but the air shifted around them.

Angel’s heart skipped a beat as Sebastian stared at him.

It was a moment. Fuck, it felt like a moment.

Not a sexy, we should kiss moment but still a moment.

“Okay.” One word and it seemed like it took a lot of effort for Sebastian to say it.

Tension bled away and Angel forced a teasing smile.

“Come on. We’re fun.”

“Will the cruel big brother be there?” Sebastian asked as they jogged down the stairs. The teasing voice returned.

“Absolutely. If you’re in the state, it’s a command performance.”

Which led to a discussion about when they’d gotten to Alaska. Angel had been born there. Sebastian had moved up less than a year ago.

“So you haven’t lived through a winter up here?” Angel asked after they’d gone through the struggle of the seatbelt and gotten back on the road.

“No, but I’ve lived in cold places before.”

“It’s not how cold it is. It’s how long it is.” The words trickled out of his mouth and sounded strangely sexual. He cleared his throat. “What I mean is, winter is long. September to April. It gets old.”

“Why don’t you move?”

Angel considered the question. He’d thought about moving down south. He’d actually gone to college in Washington and liked it well enough. Managed a trip or two to Seattle each year. It used to be go shopping but in the past five years, a lot of the posh chain stores he liked had opened in Anchorage. Plus there was always on line.

Now, he went south to go to football games or see green grass in the middle of winter.

He gave the answer he always gave. “It’s home. My family’s here. One sister and one brother live Outside. My brother’s in LA so if I ever need heat, I can go visit him.”

They drove down Minnesota Drive into an area where the streetlights were out. They were alone on the road. The strangely intimate feel returned to the inside of the car.

“How do you survive the long winter?” Sebastian asked his words low, almost sexual in the darkness.

Damn, that voice. One question and Angel was ready to go ass up. His cock gave a little twitch as if reminding its owner it was there and ready for use.

“Ski, snowboard, drink.”

“I don’t do anything of those things. Well, I drink.”

“Then you’ll fit in well. At one point Alaska had the most bars per capita.”

“Nice stat.”

“It’s something to do when it’s dark and cold.” He turned the corner, onto the street leading to his mom’s house. For any given holiday, his mother decorated the house like she was trying to win a competition. For Christmas, she went all out.

So did her neighbors.

Several other cars slowly crept down the lit-up winter wonderland. Every house on the street was decorated with lights and blow up Santas and at least one life-sized Nativity scene.

“Whoa.”

“Yeah. It’s gotten a little out of hand. It’s one of the places on the Christmas lights tour in the city.
