Through her closed lids, she could sense brightness, a slow, steady beep penetrating the silence. She felt cool, comfortable. Not the feeling she remembered moments before. Not wanting to move and ruin the serenity, Chrissy laid still, eyes closed, her body rested and relaxed.

The sound of metal rattling as a trolley was wheeled around her echoed through her head. Where was she? Timorously, she opened her eyes, the light scorching her retinas. A babble of chatter penetrated the space, then died away with the sound of a closing door.

Blinking, Chrissy forced the room into focus. A white tiled ceiling, fluorescent tubes, one buzzing slightly as it flickered on and off. Her throat felt dry. She tried to swallow but there was no moisture. Her lips cracked as she tried to wet them, the skin rough and sore. How long had she been laying here?

Turning her head, she saw the brilliant white of a cotton pillowcase. It smelled clean, clinical. She was in a hospital room, a monitor connected to her chest, a drip feeding through a cannula in her hand. Memories began to flood back. She had passed out at the police station. How long ago was that?

As her head cleared, Chrissy became aware of someone in the room. Raising her head from the pillow, she saw Diane Fraser standing at the end of her bed, eyes focused on the hospital chart in her hand. Chrissy’s movement caught her attention.

‘So, you’re back in the land of the living, are you?’ she said, hanging the chart back on the end of Chrissy’s bed and coming up to her side.

Chrissy tried to speak but nothing came out except a wispy croak.

‘Hold on. Let’s get you sitting up and I’ll get you some water.’

Expertly, Diane pulled Chrissy forward, plumped up the pillows and lifted her into a sitting position.

‘Good to know I remember some of the training from med school on how to deal with the living,’ she said, smiling.

Diane poured a glass of water from the jug at the side of the bed and handed it to Chrissy who drank deeply. The water tickled her throat, making her cough.

‘Steady on,’ Diane said, taking the cup and refilling it.

Chrissy drank more slowly this time, her voice loosening as the water coated her vocal cords.

‘Thank you,’ Chrissy managed, handing the empty cup back to Diane. ‘How long have I been here?’

‘Two days,’ Diane replied pulling up a chair.

‘Two days!’

‘Yes. You’ve been drifting in and out, but it looks like you’ve finally come around.’

‘What happened? I remember being at the station. David Holmes was there with Ross and Hugh. I felt unwell. Then nothing.’

‘You collapsed. Ross called an ambulance and you’ve been here since.’

‘Where’s here?’

‘You’re in Perth Royal Infirmary.’

Diane leaned her elbows on the edge of the bed, weaving her fingers together as she stared hard at Chrissy, her dark eyes, stern.

‘You know what’s wrong don’t you?’ Diane asked.

‘No. No, I don’t. I thought I was just tired.’

‘You have alcoholic hepatitis.’

‘What? I can’t have! I’m not an alcoholic!’

‘Chrissy, you’re fooling yourself.
