Chapter Twenty-One
IT WAS SLOW GOING. A stomach wound didnât heal as quickly in reality as in the movies.
Not that Jamie ever really watched that many films involving that sort of thing. His parents wouldnât have approved, but he had managed to see a few grownup movies at his friendsâ houses. It all seemed so long ago now though.
Sam was getting better. Escaping from the man who wanted to take Jamie had cost him, though, and he was looking thin and pale as he got out of bed on shaky legs, and moved over to the window.
âHow are you feeling?â Jamie asked, standing next to him and looking out.
Sam ran his fingers through his hair. He usually kept it clean shaved, but it had grown in thick and curly over the past few weeks.
âA little better, I think,â Sam said and tapped lightly at his bandage. âCanât say I feel much better about it. Have you given any more thought to what we talked about?â he said quietly.
âYou mean about getting out of here with the rest of the kids?â Jamie replied, also whispering. âOf course.â
âI wonât be able to move us out for a few more days, but with me being able to move on my own, I should be able to start planning,â Sam said. âDiego hasnât been looking for more buyers, so thatâs a relief, but itâs not going to last. We need to start getting a plan in motion.â
Jamie nodded. âAny ideas where we could go? I donât know the area well, just what Iâve seen when we went to meet buyers.â
âDonât forget the time we spent wandering the jungle after the police raided the compound,â Sam said, shaking his head.
âI donât remember much about that,â Jamie said.
âWell I remember carrying you most of the way,â Sam said with a smile and ruffled his hair. âHow are you feeling now? I know there were moments during that march when I was afraid for your life.â
Jamie shrugged his shoulders. âIâm fine now. Iâm glad you were there to carry me. I hope we can get out of here and live together. If my parents are deadâ¦â he trailed off, looking down.
Sam narrowed his eyes, looking down at the boy. âJamie, I donât know how it happened, but I have come to care a lot about you. But Iâve been your captor. That means⦠well, when we get right down to it, we canât really be friends, or even see each other once youâre out of this. Iâll make sure that you end up with someone that really will take care of you, but aside from that, we wonât see each other. Hopefully ever again.â
It physically hurt him to say that, for some reason, but as Jamie looked up at him, the kid appeared to understand, even if he didnât like it. Maybe a few months before, prior to his kidnapping and travelling down to Colombia, he would have been a little more emotional, but his experiences had forced Jamie to grow up prematurely.
