While the cord is attached, it must be kept clean and dry. You should fold your baby’s diaper over so it sits below the cord (or buy newborn diapers with a cut-out space for the cord) so it’s exposed to the air and not to urine. When the cord falls off, you may detect a little blood on the diaper, which is normal.

Avoid giving your baby a full bath until this happens. It used to be recommended to keep the area around the cord clean by wiping around the base of the cord with alcohol. However, it is now not recommended to use alcohol. I suggest you have alcohol on hand, but only use it if the cord area becomes smelly, or there are clear signs of irritation. The best thing to do is to dip a cotton swab in the alcohol, wipe it gently around the base of the cord, and pat the area dry.

If you do suspect an infection because your baby has a fever and appears unwell, or if the navel and the surrounding area become swollen or red, or there is pus at the base of the cord, then you should contact your doctor immediately.
