Chapter 9

A light halo of morning light shimmered through the ancient inn’s curtains, casting a yellow beam throughout the entire room. Charity barely opened her eyes before she was washed with an overwhelming feeling of nervous excitement.

Rolling over onto her side, she grinned as the taste of last night’s wine was still on her lips. All she could think about was her luck and how perfect the day was going to be. Not only was she going out with an incredibly hot guy, she was in London. What were the odds?

Before Charity could daydream anymore about Matt though, there was a light knock on the door.

“Good Morning, miss. I have a fresh cup of tea for you,” Bergita, the inn maid, announced through the door.

“Just a second!” Charity hopped out of bed, threw on her robe, and hurried to the door. As she opened it, she was greeted with the overwhelming yet pleasing scent of peppermint tea, as well as an anxious smile from Bergita.

“Morning, miss. I also must add that your, err, husband is waiting for you in the inn lobby.”

Charity’s cheeks suddenly were in flames. Matt was here already? “Oh, already? Okay, well, let me throw some clothes on,” Charity stammered as she grabbed the peppermint tea and slammed the door shut. She ran into the bathroom, flicking the light on with sweaty palms.

“Crap. I look like shit!” Charity groaned, splashing water on her face. She was frantic as she ran to her small suitcase and flung out outfit after outfit. Before she knew it, there was a monstrous pile of mismatched outfits that Charity knew she’d never have the confidence to wear.

In complete exasperation, she knelt and picked up a short, tight sweater dress. It was emerald green with a turtleneck and sleeves that bloomed out at the wrists. There was no way in hell this was ever in her closet. Rolling her eyes, it dawned on Charity that the very exuberant Margaret had to have slipped it into her suitcase.

She attempted to hold the dress against her body, but immediately felt idiotic. God, how she wished she could tap into Margaret’s boldness.

“What am I going to do?” Charity cried as she fell onto the floor in the pile of clothes. She wished she could be any woman other than herself, even despite the fact that Matt was into her. Being a detective for all those years had led Charity to lose her touch of sensuality.

Not that she was ever a confident, sensual woman to begin with. That was the gift of her sister Sarah. Sarah wasn’t just a cheerleader; she was a goddess.

Her curves were killer, and whenever she walked, her hips would sway side to side seductively. Unlike Charity, Sarah had very short white-blonde hair that she never let grow past her ears. But she was proof that it wasn’t long, gorgeous hair that invited guys in. It was that air of sensual perfection that drew them in.

Back when Charity had her first crush in middle school, she had thought to write him a note, but Sarah instructed otherwise.
