Chapter 9
âNo it wasnât!â I yell.
Detective Gardiner has a notebook out and is writing everything down. âAnd what makes you so certain heâs not the guilty party?â
âBecauseâ¦â I look across to Hattie. âJust because.â
âIâm afraid thatâs not really a good enough reason, young man. We need a bit more to go on than that. Detective Williams here will arrange for one of our fingerprint people to come along in the next hour so please donât move anything in the rooms concerned. Meanwhile weâll need a list of whatâs been stolen and when you think the robbery might have taken place, and the details of this lad. What did you say his name was? Charlie Palmer?â
âThatâs right.â
Thea tells them everything including all about Nanaâs jewellery. I show them the earring I found while Hattie helps Rob get everyone a drink.
âDidnât take anything else, then? Hmmm, looks like they were specifically targeting certain valuables like jewellery. So this lad then, your friend Charlie â local boy, is he?â
I jump to my feet. âYouâre wasting time. It wasnât him. I do know who the real burglars are, though â the Kimbles from down the road, and theyâve got Mr Dupontâs generator too.â
âGenerator? And whoâs Mr Dupont?â
âMr Dupont used to live here but he lives at Hope House now, the old peopleâs home where the childrenâs home used to be. His generator was left behind in a cupboard in the cellar and now itâs gone. He really, really wants it back.â
Thea stares daggers at me. âNathan! Mum would go bonkers if she knew youâd just said that about the Kimbles.â She turns towards the policemen. âOur mum reckons my brotherâs friend is making up stories about them to get himself off the hook.â
The detective carries on asking me about Charlie and the generator. I just tell him what I know â well, about Charlie at any rate. I donât know where he lives or where he comes from. In fact I donât really know much about him at all and what I do know, I canât tell them.
âNow, you wouldnât be trying to cover for this boy, would you, by any chance? Wouldnât be the first time someoneâs tried to shift the blame to save a friend. Itâs very noble and all that but if heâs guilty weâll find out and then you could be in trouble yourself. Best to tell us everything now, especially if heâs been involved in the other burglaries in the vicinity.â
âI canât,â I say.
âGot some sort of hold over you, has he? Using blackmail to keep you quiet?â
âNo! No! If I told you, you wouldnât believe me.â
âYou could try. Detective Williams and I are very understanding.â
I shake my head.
âNathan, if Mum was here sheâd say stop being difficult and tell the detective.â
âI canât, Thea, I just canât. Sorry.â
âOkay. Okay. So you, young lady â Hattie, isnât it? Have you met this Charlie Palmer?â
Thea interrupts immediately. âOh, Hattie doesnât know anything. Itâs the first time sheâs been here.â
âI see. Ah, sounds like my fingerprint colleagueâs arrived.
