Chapter 16

“Cassie, you’re confused.” Sebastian stared into her eyes. “I didn’t run you off the road. I just saw your car on the side of the road and stopped to help.”

“No, that’s not true.” Cassie backed away from him as she heard the sound of an ambulance approaching. She heard another sound from not so far away, the sound of a police siren. Her stomach twisted as she realized that it must be coming from Detective Graham’s car. “I saw you, I saw your truck behind me!” She tried to slow her breathing as her heart pounded.

“Cassie, I don’t know what you saw, but it wasn’t me.” Sebastian gently curled his hands around her arms just above her elbows. “Did someone do this to you? Did someone run you off the road?”

“Let go.” Cassie took a step back as he released her. Detective Graham’s car pulled onto the shoulder, his headlights bright in the rain that had begun to ease.

“What’s going on here? I heard an emergency call over the radio.” Detective Graham jogged toward them.

“Someone ran me off the road.” Cassie winced as she realized that she had no way to prove that. Sebastian claimed that he had arrived later. “Someone in a truck, just like his.” She peered through the rain at the other vehicle on the side of the road. Instead of the blue pickup truck that she had seen Sebastian drive before, it looked like an old station wagon.

“Just like his?” Oliver turned his attention on Sebastian.

“My truck is in the shop.” Sebastian held up his hands. “I don’t know what Cassie saw, but it wasn’t me, and it wasn’t my truck.”

“Are you sure there was a truck?” Oliver turned back to face her.

“Yes, of course, I’m sure.” Cassie’s thoughts spun with the revelation that Sebastian’s truck was in the shop. If it wasn’t him that ran her off the road, then who was it, and why?

“Did you get a look at the driver?” Oliver squinted up at the few raindrops that still fell. “Even a glimpse?”

“No.” Cassie sighed. “The rain was heavy, and the headlights blinded me when he drove up behind me.” She frowned as she looked over at her car. “I thought he was going to slam right into me.”

“You keep saying he.” Oliver moved closer to her, his eyes narrowed. “Are you sure you didn’t get a look at the driver?”

“No, I didn’t. I saw the truck, and it looked like Sebastian’s truck, so I guess I just assumed he was driving it.” Cassie glanced over at Sebastian, who continued to stare at her, his jaw tight.

“But it wasn’t me. You believe me, don’t you?” Sebastian tried to meet her eyes.

“I don’t know what to believe. I just want to go home.” Cassie’s stomach lurched as she realized that she had good reason to be at home. The moving truck was due to deliver all of her possessions in less than an hour. “I have to go.”

“Wait a minute.” Oliver stepped in front of her.
