Chapter

Katelyn

I confirmed Theo Slater’s Atlanta flight was on time, then booked a chopper while Nathan packed an overnight bag.

He walked into the office, and I eyed the small duffel bag he had slung over his shoulder. “You’re only taking one change of clothes?”

“Slater has no military training. He’ll break in the first twenty-four hours.”

An American scientist who’d spent twelve years working with the US Department of Defense before throwing in with the Chinese was a traitor in Nathan’s world. Nathan, an ex-naval intelligence officer, believed to his core that traitors had no rights. He came from a universe where debriefings lasted for days. Food, drink, and breaks were at the interrogator’s discretion. With the Department of Defense’s highest value asset still at large, I had no doubt he planned to use the same interview tactics, sans the no food, no drink. Although, breaks would be optional.

I didn’t know much about Theo Slater, but I knew more than anyone else in our office and wanted a seat at the interview table. I also wanted to be in the field searching for Rachel. What I didn’t want was to trace a nonexistent money trail!

I wrestled to keep my voice calm, even though it felt like a firecracker had exploded in my chest. “Why are you assigning Joleen to the field and leaving me behind a desk?”

“Joleen is an experienced field agent—” He cut his gaze in my direction and swallowed whatever he’d planned to say next. He shifted from one foot to the other as if his shoes were a size too small. Sighed. “You agreed there isn’t a money trail to follow.” He used his end-of-discussion tone, turned, and headed for the door.

My head exploded, and I saw nuclear yellow. I followed him down the hall. “So why are you chaining me to a desk? Joleen found Slater, and Jerri can handle a digital manhunt for Hugh Forest.” I matched his stride into the kitchen. The nuclear yellow now bloomed across my vision. If he thought this discussion was over…. “Nathan.”

“What time is the chopper meeting us?” He glanced over his shoulder, and something stopped him midstride. Probably my tomato-red face. I inhaled a breath to steady my voice. “Nathan.”

“We’re going to be late. Can we talk about this in the car?”

I tamped down the urge to click my heels and salute.

“Are you packed?” He glanced around the kitchen. “Where’s your bag?”

My brain stutter-stepped. “In the trunk of my car. I packed earlier when Joleen and I were headed to Atlanta.” So I was going to Atlanta. I checked my watch. “Chopper arrives in thirty-five minutes.” If traffic cooperated, we were twenty minutes from the airport.

He checked the back door, and I set the alarm. I grabbed my overnight case from my car in the garage, and Nathan tossed our bags into his SUV’s trunk. He threw me his keys. “Do you mind driving? I need to update Chanel and check in with Ethan.”

Midafternoon traffic should be tolerable, but I’d take Gulfstream Road just to be safe.
