Without subsisting in the manner of a Platonic “idea,” she is for all that more than a mere aggregate [of communities or persons, q.v.]. The divine call that summons her into reality and the divine principle which animates her make her always anterior and superior to anything which can be enumerated and distinguished in her; you can say that she was born of the Apostles, yet they themselves were first conceived by her. And it is this Church in her entirety who is, in her unicity and her unity, indissolubly a hierarchical society and a community of grace, under two different aspects respectively.16
