Chapter 8
“Mr. Hamilton is here to see you,” Marcus’ voice came through Cerise’s desk phone.
“Thanks Marcus, please send him in,” Ceri sighed, rubbing her temples. It was so much easier to deal with her job, her libido and her life when Blake just left her alone. Her office door buzzed open and she pasted on a professional smile.
“To what do I owe the pleasure?” she asked, giving every appearance of being terribly busy.
“Just checking in,” Blake replied easily, watching her carefully. “Have you had a chance to chase down the information that I requested?”
“Working on it,” her voice was clipped. “What’s the rush, I really didn’t see anything in there that seemed emergent,” she queried, fishing.
“I’m doing some demographic research on our performers to see where our best chances are in finding them. That sort of thing needs to be discovered sooner rather than later if we plan to stay ahead of our competitors,” he explained smoothly, not quite meeting her eyes.
“Isn’t that…my department,” she challenged lightly, disturbed that he was treading on her territory.
Blake smiled knowingly, “We’re a team here, right? Being on the same page can only help us grow.” His smile didn’t seem to reach his eyes, and Cerise struggled to maintain eye contact, feeling naked under his gaze.
“Of course,” she agreed shakily, feeling more paranoid by the minute. “Are we done here?” she asked, shuffling some papers importantly. “I really need to get back to running the company,” she manufactured a smile. Blake looked at her for a long moment.
“Are you free for dinner tonight?” he asked casually, too casually.
“Why? Is Samara busy babysitting or something?” Cerise bit out, surprised at the sarcastic venom in her voice. Blake raised a disapproving eyebrow before responding.
“Sam is a performer. My interactions with her take place during business hours,” he replied, drilling her with a glance.
“I’m sorry,” Ceri said quietly, “I’m working very hard to keep everything running smoothly, it just stresses me out sometimes.” Uncharacteristically, she looked down at her lap, suddenly shy.
“No apologies,” Blake lightened the moment, easing the awkwardness. “Pick you up at your place around 7:00?”
“No! That is, I mean…I’ll still be here at 7:00, pick me up here,” she faltered, cursing herself inwardly. The last thing she needed was for Frankie to show up with take-out when Blake was waiting outside in the limo.
“7:00 it is – I’ll see you then.” Cerise watched him walk to the door and let out a sigh of relief when he closed it behind him. What was it about that man that turned her to jelly every time she came within 10 feet of him? Despite the fun, easygoing and sexually satisfying relationship that she was having with Frankie Michaels, she still couldn’t get Blake out of her head. She knew that it was risky to have dinner with him, but she had to try and find out if he really did suspect her of trying to sabotage his operation of BVR, and if she were being truthful, she missed the intimacy that they had shared early on.
