I. AUTHORSHIP AND DATE

The author of Judges is not named. A Jewish tradition named Samuel as the author, but the evidence is too meager to draw any firm conclusions. The phrase “In those days there was no king in Israel,” which occurs three times (Judg 17:6; 18:1; 21:25), implies that the book was written when there was a king in Israel. A strong contrast between the infidelity of Benjamin and the fidelity of Judah might be an allusion to the political tension between the house of Saul and the house of David—an inference reinforced by the marked contrast between the hospitality of Bethlehem (19:1–9), the home of David, and the extremely inhospitable conduct of Gibeah (19:1–26), the home of Saul. This allusion might point to a time in the early monarchy. The statement that “the Jebusites have dwelt with the people of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day” (1:21) might point to a time before David’s conquest of Jerusalem (2 Sam 5:6–9).
