At evening’s end, Sara called goodnight to Howard, easy and natural, as we walked to our bedroom. Inside, she turned and leaned back against me murmuring “Give me a hand,” and began untucking her shirt. We were slow and intense for a long time before resting. After a while, she lifted her head from my chest and slid up, face next to mine, and asked: “What are you doing in this job?”

“Validation? Killing demons? I don’t know. Did you know what you were getting into?”

“You’re a good guy, Pat. You’re smart. Let the smart part drive, OK? Learn from what happened in Frankfurt, mourn your friend, and let’s find Qasim. Just be smart about it.”

“We’re all smart.”

She laughed, then so did I, and we slept. Mine was dreamless.
