Maya

What am I doing?

Marching into a cursed castle. Risking my life. I think I’m going to faint.

I’m not a hero.

Though… I was yesterday. I was brave. Timman and Kali would’ve bled out if I hadn’t been there.

Though it had all been instinct yesterday.

I would never have chosen to go after a group of deadly bandits.

A shiver runs down my spine.

Timman was the real hero, rushing off to save Kali.

All I did was heal.

Well… I did put the orc to sleep. Even if she woke up and nearly killed us. On the way home, Timman scolded me. Said if I ever drop someone like that again, unconscious, or not, I need to finish the job. Cut their throat.

I told him I couldn’t do that. Not if they were helpless.

Kali scoffed. “She wasn’t innocent. She was a thief. A murderer. And she nearly killed us because you hesitated.”

I guess once the gratitude wore off, they figured I needed humbling.

Thing is… they aren’t wrong.

At least, that’s what Gammy said when I told her everything. I know I promised to keep everything a secret, but I tell Gammy everything. I have since I could first speak.

She was pleased I’d used the sleep spell the way I had – one meant to knock patients out for surgery not put dangerous opponents to sleep on the battlefield. She was even more pleased I used the adrenaline spell to jolt Timman back to life.

Then she surprised me.

“They were right,” she said. “You should’ve killed the orc.”

I stared at her. “But… we’re Healers. We save lives.”

Gammy gave me that look. The one that says I’m being especially stupid.

“Maya, the orc almost ended three lives. Yours, Kali’s, the boy’s. Sometimes you may need to take a life to save others.”

I nodded. Logically, I understood. My heart still wasn’t sure.

Then she said, “And as for the boy… fuck him all you like.”

“Gammy!”

“Oh, don’t you Gammy me. You think I didn’t have my share of lovers in my day?”

“Gammy!”

“Sex is natural, Maya. Healthy. Feels good. Makes them feel good too if you’re doing it right. Nothing wrong with it. But love?” She clicked her tongue. “Love’s a liability. Makes you do stupid things. Risk your life. Hell, risk everyone’s life—chasing after some boy you think you can’t live without. Or trying to save him in the middle of a dungeon with monsters all around.”

She leaned in, eyes twinkling. “Let Timman ravage you for a few weeks, sure. Then move on. There’s plenty of good-looking adventurers outside that castle, both male and female.”

“Gammy!”

I shake my head and focus on the task at hand – the castle.

Forget yesterday, Maya. Focus on the here and now.

I could back out. Set up a little tent outside the castle. Offer healing to real adventurers. Sell them poultices and salves. Stay safe. Never risk my life again.

But I don’t move.

Can’t back out now, Maya.

I glance at Timman. He’s staring at Kali again.

He’s not going to notice you. Why would he? She’s bold, beautiful, and powerful. She throws fireballs.
