Chapter 30

Once I was back in the office, I took Morton for a walk through the neighborhood. I left Louie a note telling him I was going to check on Heidi, and I’d meet him at The Spot. We drove over to Heidi’s, and I was just about to get out of the car when my phone rang.

“Hi, Candi. I was just going to call you,” I lied.

“Hi, Dev, glad I got you. I just wanted to let you know that I’ve obtained the warrant. I’ve been in touch with George Turner. He’s the Secret Service Agent I mentioned. We’re meeting at the First National Bank tomorrow morning at 11:00. I would love to have you join us. I plan on calling Dennis Constantine at First National tomorrow morning once we meet in front of the bank. If you would like to get in touch with your contact in the St. Paul Police Department, that would be fine. But please, do not contact them until tomorrow morning.”

“Okay, I can do that. Let me ask you a question.”

“By all means,” she said.

“If I have a thought there may be more of this currency around, would it make sense to get a search warrant for other locations before tomorrow?”

She didn’t even pause to think about an answer. “Let’s wait. Make sure we know what we’re dealing with. At this point, I’m ninety-eight percent sure we’ll be able to confirm the currency is counterfeit. But let’s make sure that’s the case and then quietly obtain warrants to search homes and businesses of all individuals involved.”

“Okay, so I’ll call the police tomorrow, and we’ll meet you at 11:00 at the bank.”

“Yes, and Dev?”

“Yeah.”

“Don’t forget the key to the Safety Deposit Box.”

“Oh, yeah, thanks for reminding me,” I said.

We disconnected, and I pulled on the gloves and the mask. I let myself in Heidi’s front door, stepped into the surgical gown I’d left hanging on the closet doorknob, and headed toward the bedroom. I heard Heidi coughing before I made it to her room.

“Hey, how you doing, lady?” I asked.

Heidi attempted to focus on me for a moment, but she was clearly out of it. She coughed again and closed her eyes. I brought her water glass out to the kitchen and placed it in the dishwasher. I filled a fresh glass and brought it back to her. I more or less stuffed two Ibuprofen into her mouth then placed the water glass to her lips. She swallowed the first three sips, then flew into a coughing jag, spitting out the last bit of water. When she finally stopped coughing, her eyes were closed, and I stared at her just to make sure she was still breathing. She was, but they were shallow breaths.

I went back into the kitchen, turned on the dishwasher, then made my way toward the front door. I turned on the table lamp in the living room, then took a wipe from the packet and cleaned off the doorknob before I stepped out of my surgical gown and hung it up.
