CHAPTER 24

The dinner at Diana’s’ was uneventful after the two goons left. She asked if I’d sign a few menus and wave to some of her curious patrons. For that little inconvenience, she ate the tab. I like the notoriety I’m receiving, I think.

Back at the IG, before I excused myself and went upstairs to make a couple of phone calls, I told Annie never to leave word with the help of where we were going. You can always call in if you’re concerned about something back at the bar.

One Eye Eddie was my first call on the list. It was almost eight, and I wanted to catch him before he left his place. I needed him to bring some heavy-duty hardware with him. We’d need more firepower tonight at Wrecker’s junkyard.

Then, I called Wrecker to set up the meet at his place tonight. His first reaction was to tell me to take my party somewhere else, but not exactly in those words. I changed his mind when I reminded him that he owes me for setting him up as a private eye on my payroll. I needed his help on this case. When I told him I intended to kill some bad guys, it seemed to turn him around. He couldn’t resist the opportunity to kill some honkeys.

Annie was giving me a cold stare.

“Red, you’re going out late tonight, aren’t you? You’re in no condition to start a fight with Hans. You’re limping from the bullet wound in your leg. It hasn’t had enough time to heal properly. Do you want to get yourself killed?”

I ignored her and worked at the bar. It was almost ten o’clock when one eye Eddie walked in. I headed toward the kitchen and motioned for him to follow. I wanted to get an inventory of the weapons he brought with him. My shotgun was still impounded, but I bought another one on the street a couple of days ago. I’ll find out tonight if it will fire. Eddie was just beginning to tell me what he had in his trunk when Wrecker walked in the open back door of the kitchen.

“You can use the front door now, Wrecker. Lincoln fixed that.”

“Fuck you… you honkey mothafucker. I didn’t use the front door ‘cause I didn’t want anyone that might know me to see me coming into this honkey shit hole.”

I could see one eye, Eddie, looking at Wrecker and getting ready to hammer him.

“You have any more shines with you? Red needs two porters to work tonight with you,” Eddie blurted out while looking right at Wrecker through the only visual portal he had left feeding his brain.

“Fuck you too, Cyclops. I remember you when you were on the beat up on the Hill. A couple of brothers from there fucked you up. They put you on pension and you lost your free doughnut pass. You here in the kitchen lookin for a handout?” Wrecker fired back at Eddie.

I had to stop the chatter between these two before one of them started reaching for hardware.
