Personal Qualifications

Students with artistic talent may already be interested in design. You don't have to focus your talent on jewelry alone. In fact, your love of art should lead you to study other genres as well. Not only is it important to be creative, but it also helps to be able to identify trends if you go into mass-market jewelry design/manufacturing. Do you know what the next big clothing trend will be? Can you predict what colors will be popular next season? Can you figure out what's in and what's out? These abilities will heighten your creativity.

From a technical standpoint, it is beneficial to be a detail-oriented person and someone with good hand-eye coordination. Multiple talents enable you to work not only in repair and sizing, but in designing, fabricating and stone setting. To do much of this work, you will need patience and the ability to adhere to deadlines. A successful jewelry store delivers what it promises and when it promises it.

Designers and bench jewelers should be good communicators. Whether you are doing custom designs, repairing a piece or sizing, you need to be able to ask the right questions and to be able to get across your design concept. Sales, whether as your primary position or as part of your many duties, requires enthusiasm, persuasiveness, and communication and interpersonal skills.

A positive attitude and a strong work ethic are important qualities. Not only are your technical skills valuable to an employer, but also your ability to arrive promptly, finish your work, work with a team, and perform under pressure.

It also helps to have computer skills and an interest in technology. Although many of the procedures for creating fine jewelry come from hundreds of years of doing it the same way, advanced tools like lasers, cutting equipment, and CAD (computer assisted design) are always evolving. Your advancement in this field may be dependent on learning these new technologies.

If your goal is a management position, you will need to be able to direct others, work with employees and delegate responsibilities. Most managers juggle numerous duties. You will need to handle employee hiring and firing and know how to administer employee benefits. You will probably be in the showroom selling and handling customers' needs. Merchandise display, marketing and advertising could also be part of your job. While much of this can be learned, it helps to be an organized person and someone who offers to take on extra duties.
