Whack.
âOw,â I yelled. The pebble that had just connected with my head dropped to my feet.
âFocus,â Anthony shouted. A large stone I stood in front of faltered but I caught it. I raised it higher into the air to prevent it from landing on Anthony who sat below. My power flowed through me, and I felt every smooth and sharp edge of the rock, as if my hand was grazing over it. Only it wasnât. Nothing touched it but my energy.
Another pebble flew, aimed at my head, but I dodged it. Except, I lost my concentration, and my powers faltered for a moment. The large stone dropped, and my powers werenât fast enough to catch it. Anthony rolled out of the way in time.
I dropped my hands in frustration, swearing under my breath.
âSorry,â I mumbled, as I helped Anthony to his feet.
âYou must learn to stay connected to your powers despite what is going on around you.â Anthony brushed himself off after taking my outstretched hand.
I had managed to learn the basics of my abilities. I could make things move around me, but only for a short amount of time, if I had no distractions.
âI know, I know.â I plopped down on the grass and sighed. âThis is impossible.â
âI didnât think the word âimpossibleâ was even in your vocabulary,â Max said from his resting place under the tree. The mound of dirt Chevy was buried under was now covered in bright, little sprouts of green grass, marking the time that had passed, though the pain still lingered. It had been a few weeks, yet it felt like itâd all happened just yesterday.
Max was recuperating, and despite my protests, he insisted on helping out in any way he could. Heâd taken on the role of âofficial pebble thrower,â and boy, did he enjoy that job.
I glared at Max. âYou try it.â
He laughed. âWould if I could. Iâd probably do way better than you. Too bad youâre the Carbon and not me.â
I tossed a pebble at his head, and he dodged it with another laugh.
âSee?â
âShut up.â
âEnough,â Anthony bellowed. âGet up and try it again.â
I felt the urgency in Anthonyâs voice. Over the past few weeks, thereâd been more breaches in Lenaâs shield, though thereâd been no attacks. That was the part that worried me the most. Theyâd figured out a way to get through, but why hadnât they attacked yet? We were living in a state of fear and uncertainty knowing the day would come. Every sound out of the ordinary had us all flinching.
With another sigh, I rose to my feet. Tugging on the energy I was still learning to detect, I raised the stone, and it hovered at chest height. The stone weighed on me, and every inch of my powers wrapped tightly around the rock. Anthony slid underneath it.
âThis time, I will not move until I tell you the drill is over.â His jaw clenched as he laid his head directly under the rock.
Panic ran through me before I took a deep breath.
