"Alright, listen up," Steve said to us. "Kelly's taking the day off today. It's mandatory, it's not her choice, it's mine. The reasons for the day off are personal. We're gonna keep it that way. I expect you all to be professional in that regard. Let her keep her personal reasons personal. Just know, this is not a reprimand or punishment of any sort, but it is a direct order from myself. So, for the day, Kai, you're gonna be in charge. This case continues regardless of our missing team member. I expect she will be back tomorrow and everything will go forward as per usual. But until then, Kai, you know what to do. Thanks everybody."

Steve returned to his office, and I stood in the middle of the room, dumbfounded. I had always looked at the way our team ran cases as just that, a team effort. Each of us had skills and unique backgrounds that we brought to the table, but I knew that Kelly was the glue that held it all together. I was conflicted both because of our recent argument regarding the leaked information, but also because I felt like it was crossing a line to do a job that I felt was truly not meant for me. I used to think it was, but that was before I saw how well Kelly did it.

Knowing I had no other choice, I spoke. "Alright guys, you heard Simmons. Business as usual. This doesn't need to be a big thing. Kelly needs the day. Let's show her the respect of giving her that. For today, I'd like to go back and interview the victims from the first crash again. I think that maybe we're looking at this thing too closely. I want to go back and look at this thing again from start to finish and try to get a bird's eye view of it."

The team nodded, and I began to give out instructions.

"Jackson, if you can go back through everything again—any records, any additional details that you can pull, no matter how small—from the very first accident. Ben, Renna, if there's anything else coming from the lab, autopsy-wise, or even any other evidence, go through it all again. I know this is redundant, and I know that we've done this already, but let's just give this one more look to make sure we're not overlooking any small detail. We've all been here before. We've all been down the rabbit hole feeling like we can't catch a break, and then one little thing changes everything. I'm convinced that that crumb is out there somewhere. Let's get to work."

As the team dispersed, I stopped Jackson. "Let me see you for a second."

Jackson walked over quickly.

I pulled him aside. "Just so you know, it's no longer a secret that I'm being looked at as the leak of that anonymous witness stuff with the media."

Jackson dropped his head like a teenager who'd just been caught sipping on a beer underage.

I made eye contact, keeping my expression neutral.
