I’m not a nervous person. Once you get to be my size, there’s nothing much that’s scary. That’s why I have no problem going down to the river to get fish after dark. Nothing could sneak up on me. On the off chance someone sees me and still decides to attack, he won’t stand a chance in hell. A claw to the gut, and I’ll be done with him.

Unless that bastard Flint and his merry band of assholes finds us. That could be a problem. It would be nearly impossible for them to sneak up on us. Stone and Draven would hear them coming too, so I have nothing to worry about.

I let Minerva take the lead as we walk. It’s not that late, but it’s late enough for the moon to be high and the fireflies to be out. They like Minerva. They hover behind her shoulders as she walks, making a short cape of flashing lights. I don’t think Minerva notices. I decide not to tell her. If she moves, she might chase the fireflies away. Maybe they sense her magic or something?

I don’t know much about magic. I didn’t have to take any classes on it in school since bear shifters don’t have any. Maybe the fireflies are just inexplicably pulled to her like I am.

I reach out and touch Minerva’s shoulder or waist when she needs to turn in a certain direction. The river isn’t far, but we’re moving slowly. After the sun sets, it’s smart to move slowly and make as little noise as possible in the forest. You never know what’s lurking in the dark, especially now that there are search parties coming after us. I hated being away from Minerva during the day, but I’m glad I went to town. The information I learned might just save our lives.

Luckily for Draven and me, none of the people who want us dead were in Bonfire Falls. They were all out hunting us. Ironically, we were perfectly safe in town.

Still, everyone in town did act strangely towards me and Draven. They knew we were being hunted. No one ever said anything explicitly, but I think Flint might’ve told them that Stone, Draven, and I are traitors. That would keep anyone from helping us.

If that’s the case, Flint didn’t think it through. As white-picket-fence as it sounds, Draven and I are pillars of the community. I run an essential business for fuck’s sake. I don’t really think of my garage as a business. I think of it as a fun activity people will pay me to do. But every car in town comes through my shop. Without me, there’s no one to repair their rides.

Draven makes it his mission to be on friendly terms with everyone. I never got that. I mean, having people smile at you on the street sounds neat and all, if you’re into that, but I’m not. I’d rather have a close band of ride or die brothers, than a bunch of superficial acquaintances.
