7. Transl. note: Frauke Petry, born 1975, was a leading politician of the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (Alternative for Germany). She left the party in September 2017, and is now an independent member of the Bundestag. She has announced that she will retire from politics when her term comes to an end in 2021. Alexander Gauland, born 1941, is a co-founder of the AfD and was co-leader from 2017 to 2019. He has been a member of the Bundestag since 2017. Björn Höcke, born 1972, is a member of the AfD’s ‘Der Flügel’ (The Wing) group which has been declared a right-wing extremist organization by the German Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution. He infamously called the Holocaust memorial in Berlin a ‘memorial of shame’. A subsequent attempt by leading figures of the party to have him expelled failed in 2018. He is a member of the parliament of the federal state of Thuringia.

8. Transl. note: on 19 December 2016, Amri, born in Tunisia, carried out a terrorist attack at a Christmas market in Berlin, driving a lorry into the crowd and killing twelve people, including the lorry driver, whom Amri shot. A further fiftyfive people were injured. Amri was shot and killed by Italian police in Sesto San Giovanni four days later. He had links with radical Islamist circles in Germany.
