I picked up Cupcake Callie’s carrier with one hand and Izzy slipped her small hand into my other one. She skipped along at my side as we traipsed into Daisy’s house.

This sudden turn of events presented a new problem.

Sure, I needed to pick up Mr. Socks, but more importantly, we had to find a spot for Cupcake Callie. Her patience at being cooped up in the carrier, even if it was the Rolls Royce of cat carriers, wouldn’t last forever. She needed a more permanent safe, comfortable, and secure place where we could also keep an eye on her.

Once inside, we followed the sound of voices. I lifted my nose and inhaled a mouthwatering, sweet aroma. I knew the long hallway would open into Daisy’s expansive kitchen where the pre-auction bustle was in progress. A twinge of guilt reminded me that I should be working too but… like happens sometimes, other events had gotten in the way.

I stopped at the entrance. Platters of donuts were stacked everywhere. Boston Crème, cider, sprinkle-covered, chocolate-glazed, and every other flavor imaginable made by the donut queen of Blueberry Bay, Abby Hart.

Abby fished out the last of her donuts from the deep fryer and spread them out on paper towels. “All done for now,” she said and untied her apron. “I’ll be back in an hour or so.”

From the mess at Ava’s workspace, she hadn’t wasted a minute getting her cupcake batter mixed and was now busy filling several pans.

Dani, from the Little Dog Diner, juggled two huge stainless-steel bowls over to Daisy’s industrial-sized fridge and slid them onto a shelf, a sigh of relief that the contents, her special lobster roll mixture, hadn’t spilled over the edge. My stomach growled thinking about the tender morsels of local lobster meat, a treat on the menu to be served before the auction started.

“I’ve done everything I can do for now,” Dani said. “I’ll be back before the auction starts to put the lobster rolls together. Come on, Pip.” Her Jack Russell terrier stood, stretched, and trotted behind Dani.

“See you later,” I said as Dani and Abby passed me on their way out.

If only I were done with my preparations. I didn’t even know when Tilly and I could start the prep for our shakes and smoothies. But I couldn’t think about that right now with the weight of the cat carrier reminding me of Cupcake Callie’s situation.

“Can I sample a donut please?” Izzy asked, her big eyes impossible to resist.

Ava and Daisy stopped what they were doing and looked in our direction.

“You sure can,” Daisy said. She slid a Boston Crème donut onto a plate and handed it to Izzy. “You can be our official taste tester. How does that sound?”

Izzy bit into the donut, smooshing crème filling out the sides. She swallowed, licked filling off her lips, and declared, ““Yummy!”

Too bad Abby wasn’t still around to hear the compliment, but I was sure she already knew her donuts were two-thumbs-up delicious.

Just then, Callie decided to announce her presence with a long frustrated meeeooowwwww.
