Alannah provided me with the code to enter the vault. She told me she hadn’t been in here and had even considered burning everything before deciding to leave it.

When Arthur had me, I’d heard him talking to one of his men about this room. I had sworn to myself that someday I’d bust in and take everything in it so that I could destroy him. It was a little late for that now, but I was still curious about what dirty little secrets would be revealed.

What I found when I opened the door made me groan. The space was filled with filing cabinets and boxes piled to the ceilings. As digital as he was with everything else, I should have realized that he’d keep paper copies instead. Can’t hack a filing cabinet, but at least he was organized.

A table sat in the middle of the room with two chairs surrounding it, so I grabbed a box and started digging. There were folders and thumb drives with dirt on everyone, from politicians to CEOs to gang members. He certainly knew how to keep his blackmail safe, but would he do the same with information that could prove him a liar? If it were me, I’d keep that somewhere safer, somewhere personal. But where…

I searched for any folder with a name I recognized, not entirely shocked to find he’d kept tabs on Vincent and Alannah. But as I made my way through the rest of the files, I couldn’t find a single thing on Dominic Kade. Why? From everything I’d heard about him, he definitely had skeletons in his closet, so why didn’t Arthur have anything?

Checking my phone for a response from Elliott, I decided to ask him for another favor. Dominic Kade may not be our top priority, but if he’d been fucking with my girl, I wanted to know why.

On a hunch, I searched for my name, desperate to find any evidence of my secret and burn it. Okay, maybe not burn it, but hide it away until I was ready to accept it. If that moment ever came.

My thoughts drifted to Alannah and the meeting with her father. Fucking Arthur still had a hold over me, even in his death. If Vincent didn’t kill me for what he believed I did to his wife, then surely Alannah and Gerard would once they knew what I was hiding.

I might have been glad to find this room organized, but after I’d made it through the first box, I realized I was wrong. This wasn’t organized, it was neat. None of the names were alphabetical, which meant I had to go through every goddamn one to find what I needed.

Eventually, the only thing I found was a folder with the word ‘Con’ on the top. Someone had scratched the rest of the name out with thick, black ink. The folder was thin, barely holding a few pieces of paper, but when I opened it up, the blood seemed to stop flowing in my veins.
