Chapter Nine
Cage sat in darkness, leaning back ever so slightly in a recliner. The leather chair was soft and inviting, and he relished the small period of relaxation. Swirling the cheap bourbon in his glass, he smiled when he heard the car pull up. The warden didn't have much of a liquor cabinet and, as Cage sipped from his glass, he grimaced in irritation. He considered once more whether he was making the right choice. Then again, he wasn't the type of person to let a useful asset go to waste. Besides, now wasn't the time to be second guessing himself.
The sound of keys jingling in the front door caused him to lean forward in anticipation. As it swung open, he held himself silent. Wanda, his ex-warden, came stumbling in after a terribly long day at work. Cage waited until she'd closed the door and hung up her coat before he spoke.
"Well hello there, Wanda. It's about time you got home." said Cage smoothly.
"Who's there?" asked Wanda as she started reaching towards her coat.
"Stop!" Cage commanded sharply. "Leave your gun where it is. Turn around and come here."
Wanda froze at Cage's tone, then slowly turned towards him. "Mr. Zisgani? Is that you?" she asked as she peered into the dark room.
Cage flipped a switch on the desk lamp sitting next to him. "Is this better, Wanda?"
"Why are you here?" Wanda asked. "Did you decide to kill me after all?"
"Kill you? Absolutely not. In fact, I'm here to help you. And from what I can tell, you could use my help right about now."
"You're here to help me?! You left me naked in my office! You're the reason I-'' Wanda stopped for a second and took a step towards him. "Get out!"
"Well you wouldn't be in this situation in the first place if you hadn't decided to try to profit from my death. You really only have yourself to blame." Cage stood up and started pacing as he spoke. "Still, I meant what I said. I can help you. I can save your job. I can turn your career back around. I can even take care of that little problem with your son."
Wanda turned pale. "How do you know about that? No one is supposed to know about that."
"I know about it because I know my business, Wanda. I know about it because it's my job to be able to find these things out... and to be able to hide them. And to be able to use them, if I need to." Cage paused. "Sit down." He motioned over to the couch.
Numbly, Wanda walked over and sat down. "What do you want from me?" she asked tonelessly.
"Oh, Wanda, I'm not threatening you. I'm offering you an opportunity. Probably the only opportunity that will give you some control back over your life. Here is what I propose. First, I will help you round up some of your missing inmates. You can stick them back in their cells. Then you can claim that the "breakout" wasn't nearly as bad as the guards had first reported.
