Chopper was looking at Chelsea like she was crazy, and she suddenly wondered if she’d scared him off by admitting she was a deadbeat mother. She couldn’t backtrack now, though, so she went on. She told him everything, from the moment she suspected she was pregnant until the lawyer showed up at her parents’ ranch. When she stopped to take a breath he said:

“Your sister is trying to get full legal custody? I don’t understand. Why? I mean…I get that you screwed up in the past, but from what I see, you’re doing great now.”

She looked around the apartment and with an amused smile she said, “I live in a studio apartment in a rundown neighborhood. I work at a cafe where I make minimum wage and a few dollars a day in tips. I have no friends. I have no relationships. The only thing I’ve really done was stop using. It’s been three years; I’ve relapsed twice and done nothing else of note with my life. My parents are getting older, and chasing a toddler around has not been easy on them. My sister Celia has been there for them through it all, even though she lives out of state and has kids of her own. She keeps Reed in Rhode Island during her kids’ school holidays so they can all get to know each other…” Chelsea didn’t even realize she had tears running down her face until Chopper reached up and wiped one away with his thumb.

“Oh, baby.” He looked like he had no idea what to say, but there was hurt for her on his face. He pulled her into his chest and for a while she stopped talking and just cuddled into him. At last, she realized she needed to finish this and she pulled back and said:

“My parents didn’t know my sister planned on doing this until she did it. Her husband is an attorney and he drew up the papers. They met with the social worker, who told them she thought it was a good idea. Since Reed has never really lived with me, it’s not like they’d be breaking any kind of bond, was what my dad told me she said. My parents never wanted to permanently take my baby from me. They just wanted him to be safe and cared for. But I’ve proven that I’m not going to be able to provide that for him…” She hadn’t even gotten to the part about Wayne yet. Chopper had to be wondering what the hell he’d gotten himself into. She’d been nothing but trouble for him so far.

“No! No. Chelsea I am living, breathing proof that where you live or how much money you have or even what your parents do for a living is not the deciding factors in how you turn out as a person. I mean, I’m in no way perfect, but I believe I am a good person and I got a good education, not despite growing up the way I did…but because of it.
