Chapter 6

Mattie’s fingers dug into Blake’s shoulders like they were going to leave bruises. Blake hoped they did. He kissed Mattie with a passion that bordered on savage. He’d been holding back, being so careful, so restrained. He wanted Mattie. God, he needed Mattie.

And Mattie returned his kiss, so sweet and hungry, and so familiar. His mouth, his taste, the way he used his tongue, even the way he breathed. Blake held him tighter, knowing he must be almost crushing Mattie to him.

They kissed for a long minute. Blake forgot everything: Bella, the attic room, the years they’d been apart. Mattie was so vital and warm in his arms, and Blake was on fire.

At length, Mattie pulled back. He eased away from Blake’s mouth slowly, like it hurt to part. Blake followed him, but Mattie turned his head to the side so Blake’s desperate kiss trailed over his cheek instead.

He didn’t speak. He stood there for a while, his face upturned to Blake’s. Blake looked at him and felt the familiar love rise up in his chest. He knew every feature of that face so well he could have drawn it from memory: the freckles, the slightly snub nose, the deep-set eyes.

It was torture not to just kiss him again. Mattie had never been able to hold out against Blake for long. Blake knew too well what excited him. Not that he’d ever had to spend too much time convincing Mattie to christen every surface in their flat with sex.

“It’s not like you to go off the boil.” They were still pressed tightly together.

“I’ve grown up, learnt some self-restraint.” There was an ironical twist to Mattie’s mouth. They weren’t teenagers any more, that was for sure. Even though Mattie didn’t look any different to the moment he’d walked out of Blake’s life. Same messy, curly hair. Same green eyes with thick black lashes. Same full mouth that always seemed to be on the verge of curling into a smile.

“I haven’t. I haven’t changed,” insisted Blake. “My feelings for you haven’t changed.”

Mattie shut his eyes like these words caused him pain. He took a deep breath and let it out raggedly. Blake could feel his warm breath on his cheek. Then he said:

“Mine haven’t either.”

Blake squeezed Mattie’s waist.

Mattie inhaled like he was going to say something, but he stayed silent. Blake cupped the back of his head and brought it to his shoulder. Mattie wouldn’t let himself be kissed, but Blake could embrace him and smell his hair.

There was a great deal more to say, but neither of them were saying it. Blake just held onto Mattie like he could keep him there forever. He tried to memorise Mattie all over again.

Somewhere in the house, a lock rattled as a key was inserted and turned. Mattie jumped guiltily out of Blake’s embrace, like they’d been caught doing something naughty.

“It’s only the housekeeper,” Blake explained. He felt suddenly cold without Mattie pressed up against him. Like Mattie had taken some of his covering - clothes, skin - with him, and left Blake uncomfortably exposed.
