Chapter 22

A Look That Could Kill?

Ellis gave Slug Harris a look that could kill as the young detective’s car swept past him and turned left into the police headquarters car park. Ellis quickened his step. He wanted a word, wanted to get the business with the bodies found in his house sorted out once and for all.

The solicitor advising him had pointed out that he had been released, after Slug’s second ridiculous interview under caution, in a position of RUI. The solicitor didn’t need to spell it out, not to an officer who had been at the top of his game. It meant that he had been released under investigation, and the investigation into him was still ongoing. Until his part in the crimes was confirmed to be negative there wasn’t a hope in hell that he would get any further unsupervised access to Connie.

Even if he was successful in achieving supervised access via the family courts it meant meeting her in a special child contact centre, somewhere near her new home once Storm moved on, as she’d threatened with her new lover boy. Ellis didn’t even know where that was. Not in England, his ex-wife had said. His heart lurched at the thought. He’d be under the gaze of a specialised health and social care worker to ensure Connie’s safety, with all the rules, regulations and costs that would involve.

Ellis couldn’t have even begun to imagine how leaving his high-flying job in law enforcement with the resulting drop in status would affect everything he did. It was especially irksome as he had given up the job specifically so that he could spend more time with his kids.

Slug Harris could have easily dismissed him as a suspect. The CPS would certainly chuck out any unsubstantiated charges in a moment, but now due to Slug’s wish to be seen as the big man, eking out the pain, Ellis’s mind was spinning. He could be hovering in limbo for years, police investigation processes having no time limit. Such a situation would sound the death knell for the business and definitely for Billie’s involvement. She’d made clear that morning that she wouldn’t be hanging around if Wilde & Darque wasn’t working out.

The thought of that hurt almost as much as losing the chance of having a normal dad relationship with Connie. He suddenly thought of Maya. He hadn’t even met her until she was eighteen and if her mate, Lily, had been telling the truth that morning when he had walked into the office, she hadn’t bonded the same way he had. Is that what was about to happen with Connie too, due to this ridiculous situation? She’d soon get sick of meeting him in a room in some centre once she started going to school and it was clear that Storm was angling to have this new man take his place. Connie had even called him ‘Papa’. Ellis closed his eyes tightly, trying to wipe that vision from his mind’s eye.

Ellis quickened his pace.
